Lan Zhigui
Lan Zhigui(1932-) is one of the first group to photograph Tibet after the establishment of PRC. He has photographed major historical events in the local scene from 1950s to 1970s. He has witnessed PLA marching into Tibet, the construction of Xikang-Tibet Highway and democratic reform in Tibet. During his twenty years' stay in Tibet, he has focused on local culture, folk art and religious events in Tibet. One of his representative works The Happy Festival of Lhasa won the ‘socialism victory gold award ’in Democratic German, which is the first international gold award in the third international award in the third international photographic art exhibition in Budapest, Hungary. Lan Zhigui has photographed early ethic groups such as Lhopa, Deng and Moinpa. Those photographs are precious in terms of its rarity. Professor Fu Aiming from The Central University for Nationalities has noted that the photographs of Lhopa and Deng by Lan Zhigui are the earliest photographic images of those ethic groups. These pictures left an extremely valuable historical record. Lan Zhigui has a deep emotional attachment with Tibet. He married with a Tibetan woman cadres named Lhozom Drolma and have been long living in Chengdu. Now he spends his late years raising flowers and playing stock market. From March 21-31, 2009, Lan Zhigui’s images were exhibited in the China Artistic Museum, entitled Eyewitness of the Democratic Reform of Tibet — Lan Zhigui’s Photographic Exhibition from 1950-1970. From May 18 to July 19, 2009, his series works entitled Eyewitness of the Potala Palace were exhibited in the Guangdong Museum. |
